Enniskillen Castle and Castle Coole

Two separate heritage visits from one base — most visitors are better off choosing one as the day's main event.

Enniskillen Castle sits on the water at the edge of the town centre and houses the county museum and the regimental museum. It is a town-centre visit you can walk to from anywhere in Enniskillen.

Castle Coole is a separate visit: a large neoclassical house in its own walled estate on the Belfast road out of town. The house and the grounds keep different arrangements, and the estate walk is a large part of what you are going for.

  • Days when the weather has ruled out the lough or the hills

How long to allow

Enniskillen Castle Museums
A couple of hours is comfortable, and it sits easily alongside lunch and shops in the town.
Castle Coole
Half a day once you include the estate. The grounds are the reason many people stay longer than they planned.
Doing both
Possible in a full day, but it is a busy one. Choosing one as the main visit usually makes for a better day.

Planning the visit

  • Decide which is the main visit and treat the other as optional, rather than scheduling both back to back.
  • From the town centre to the Castle Coole gates is roughly a 25 to 30 minute walk, with the estate walk on top of that once you are through the gates. Taxis and local buses are the usual alternatives if you are not driving.
  • Driving to Castle Coole from the town centre takes only a few minutes, with parking on the estate.
  • Check the house tour and grounds arrangements for your date — the two are not always available together.

Enniskillen town centre

The natural base. A handy base for restaurants, shops, the castle and boat trips, and the only base that makes this pair work without a car.

Lower Lough Erne lakeshore

Around 15 minutes' drive, better if you want water views and are driving in for the day anyway.

What else is nearby

Florence Court is around 20 minutes' drive south-west and makes a natural second estate on another day. Boat trips leave from the town, so a heritage morning and an afternoon on the water is an easy pairing.

If the estate is closed, the town centre carries a wet day on its own: the castle museums, the shops and Blakes of the Hollow are all within walking distance.
