Lower Lough Erne

Castle Archdale and White Island

A lakeshore country park that works as a family day in its own right, with seasonal ferry access to White Island when it is running.

Castle Archdale Country Park sits on the eastern shore of Lower Lough Erne, north of Enniskillen. It combines forest and shore trails, a marina, bike hire and a caravan and camping site, and it fills a family day without anyone needing to book anything.

White Island lies offshore, with early carved stone figures set into a church wall. Reaching it means a boat, and that is the part of the plan that has to stay flexible.

Is it right for your trip?

Suits

  • Families who want space to run around rather than a timed attraction
  • Anyone basing themselves on Lower Lough Erne with a day to fill
  • Visitors who want to be on the water without hiring a boat for a full day

Less suited to

  • Trips without a car, as this is not a walk from Enniskillen
  • Days where the White Island landing is the only thing you want to do

How long to allow

The country park
Half a day comfortably, and a full day with bike hire or a picnic by the shore.
White Island
Allow a couple of hours for the crossing and time on the island, subject to the ferry running.
Getting there
Allow roughly 20 minutes by car from Enniskillen.

Planning the visit

  • Plan the park as the day, and treat a White Island landing as a bonus rather than the reason for going.
  • Check the ferry arrangements with the operator before travelling. The crossing is seasonal, weather dependent and not run by the country park.
  • Bring waterproofs and footwear for shore and forest paths, which stay wet after rain.
  • If you want bikes or a boat, contact the relevant operator ahead rather than turning up expecting availability.

What else is nearby

Devenish Island is the other monastic site on Lower Lough Erne, reached from a different departure point, and the Lough Navar forest drive with the Cliffs of Magho viewpoint is on the far western shore.

Seasons, weather and what we cannot promise

  • Access to White Island is seasonal and depends on the ferry operating. Sailings are weather dependent and can be cancelled at short notice.
  • The ferry is not operated by the country park, so check arrangements with the operator directly before you travel.
  • Marina services, bike hire and the camping site keep their own seasons. We do not publish times, prices or availability.

If it does not happen

If the crossing is off, the forest and shore trails, the marina and the picnic areas still make a full day, and Enniskillen Castle Museums is around 20 minutes away if the rain sets in.
